Discover Black Mozzarella Di Bufala

Lynn

In 2017, the activated charcoal food trend swept the nation. Instagram was filled with photos of black lattes, ice cream, bread, and waffles, to name a few example. But, have you ever seen black Mozzarella di Bufala?

Back in 2018 when the trend was still in full swing, Cookist.com user Love Kitchen documented their trip to a dairy in Piana del Sele (Salerno, Campania, Italy) and posted several photos of black mozzarella. The user stated that charcoal was used to create the striking black color, and that the cheese tasted no different than ordinary mozzarella.

Black Mozzarella Di Bufala is so hard to come by, that I could only find images of it on three websites, none of which supply the unique product to the United States.

If you are a cheesemaker, black mozzarella can easily be created by adding the activated charcoal to the fresh milk prior to production. But, just because you can, doesn't mean you should!
