The Ice Cream Shop with 900 Flavors

Madison

In a world where foodies chase the extraordinary, one ice cream shop dares to go where no scoop has gone before. Tucked in the Andes Mountains of Mérida, Venezuela, Heladería Coromoto isn’t just your average ice cream parlor—it’s the Guinness World Record holder for offering the most flavors on the planet. Think 31 flavors is impressive? Try 900.

Yes, nine hundred.

From familiar favorites like chocolate and mango to culinary curveballs like trout, spaghetti with cheese, and even hot dog, Heladería Coromoto has redefined the boundaries of what belongs on a cone. Each flavor is natural, handcrafted, and undeniably daring. “If you eat the spaghetti with cheese ice cream, it has real spaghetti and cheese in it,” says manager José Ramiraz.

But how did this wild ice cream wonderland come to be?

The story begins with Portuguese immigrant Manuel Da Silva Oliveira. After years in the corporate ice cream world, he wanted more than plain vanilla. In 1980, he opened Heladería Coromoto, starting with just a handful of flavors. His first experimental scoop? Avocado. It took him 50 kilos of trials to nail the recipe, but the payoff was sweet—today, it’s a local favorite paired with black bean or sweetcorn.

The menu grew, fueled by Oliveira’s insatiable curiosity. Suddenly, ice cream was no longer just dessert—it was a canvas for culture and creativity. You could order the house special, “Pabellón Criollo,” a scoop inspired by Venezuela’s national dish, with flavors of beef, rice, plantains, cheese, and black beans. Or try “Viagra Hope,” a cheeky blue blend of honey and pollen.

While the shop temporarily scaled back its offerings, locals were thrilled when Heladería Coromoto reopened in June 2024 under the care of Oliveira’s children. With fewer flavors on hand, the spirit of innovation lives on.

In today’s Instagram-driven world, Heladería Coromoto is a bucket list destination for food adventurers. It’s more than a dessert stop—it’s an experience. So, would you dare to try black bean ice cream? Or are you curious to find out how hot dog tastes in frozen form? At Coromoto, every scoop tells a story—and you might just discover a flavor that speaks to you.
