Native Seeds/SEARCH, a nonprofit seed conservation organization based in Tucson, Arizona, are the stewards of Glass Gem Corn.

Glass Gem Corn was created by Carl Barnes, a part-Cherokee farmer living in Oklahoma who had a flair for breeding corn. It is unknown how long it took Barnes to create Glass Gem Corn. Careful choosing, saving and replanting of many different corn plants was required to cultivate this stunning variety. Although possibly too beautiful to eat, glass gem corn is edible in certain instances. Glass Gem Corn is a type of corn referred to as "flint corn", meaning that it is not meant to be eaten on the cob, but can be ground into cornmeal for use in recipes, or popped.

If you're interested in growing your own beautiful Glass Gem Corn, you can purchase seeds from Native Seeds/SEARCH here! Glass Gem Corn plants can reach up to 9 feet and will be ready to harvest in about 120 days. It'll feel like Christmas morning unwrapping a cob of your home grown Glass Gem Corn and discovering a one-of-a-kind beauty!
